'On some days the sun will be bright, the breeze ruffling the water, the swiftly running tide chuckling and chirruping about the cable and hull calling “Come on, let’s go” and you’ll be away on the tide bound for – where? Does it matter? You’re under way and the whole estuary is there to be sailed.'

East Coast Pilot England’s East Coast, between Lowestoft and Ramsgate, is loved for its creeks and harbours, while its shallows and sand banks make for some interesting pilotage. The authors are well-known commentators on the East Coast boating scene and wrote this new-style guide bringing a fresh approach to pilot books. With the outstanding success of the first edition, which appeared in 2005, they followed it up with a fully
revised 2nd edition in 2008, continuing and improving upon the design ideas incorporated in the original. Not only was the detail brought up to date, but the majority of the photographs were also replaced. In addition, they enlisted the aid of a number of Honorary Port Pilots, and invite you to meet them here. In 2011, the 3rd edition (whose cover is shown at top right of this web page) was published, not only fully revised but also with 20 extra pages of new detail, chartlets and photos. Please make sure that you are sold the correct edition! The authors comment: “As all three of us live and sail on the East Coast, we can truly say that the book is 'written by locals' using first-hand knowledge that has been scrupulously cross-checked. In addition, we constantly maintain this website, which is designed to help to keep the book current, by providing immediate updates well before they are gathered into future printed editions of the East Coast Pilot". The premier body for cruising sailors, the Cruising Association, was generous in its critique of the 2nd edition. The CA said: Reviewing the first edition....we said "this new book sets a new standard for clarity and attractive format". After only three years the authors have bettered this with a completely updated edition! This new Pilot cannot be too highly recommended to all East Coast yachtsmen. Let the authors explain the ideas behind East Coast Pilot, or ‘ECP’, themselves, on this link.
Where Land Meets Sea You are invited to join the authors on a trip along the East Coast of England, famous for its big skies, sea views, winding creeks, sand, shingle - and mud! Many superb aerial photos of the East Coast from Lowestoft to Ramsgate were taken for ‘East Coast Pilot’ by Patrick Roach, but only a small selection could be used. More of these pictures have now been published in a new book by the ECP authors, called ‘Where Land Meets Sea’. Although it certainly complements ECP with more views of coast, harbours and anchorages familiar to East Coast yachtsmen, the book is aimed at a wider audience.

We say “Anyone who feels that strange compulsion to go down to the sea should enjoy this journey and appreciate the strange, delicate patterns of mud and water, sea and sky.”
Crossing the Thames Estuary Written by Roger Gaspar, the object of this book is to help you plan your journey across the complex waters of the Thames Estuary quickly, easily and accurately. To do this a series of tables is provided based upon 32 routes with alternatives for Springs and Neaps and for a choice of average speeds between 3kn and 7kn. A technical book that is highly recommended by the authors of ECP for use at the chart table, to complement ‘East Coast Pilot’. It also has its own website.

shoal waters of the Thames Estuary from Lowestoft to Ramsgate.”
